That makes them the standard choice for aligning housings, jig plates, mould tool components, and any assembly that needs to be taken apart and put back together without losing registration, as well as for transmitting light shear loads between located parts. Getting the fit right depends on matching pin diameter to hole tolerance: a light press fit is normal where the pin will stay permanently in one component and locate into a clearance hole in the other, while a slip fit in both parts suits assemblies that need to be separated and realigned repeatedly. Unlike a grooved or spring pin, a dowel pin has no give of its own — it relies entirely on the hole being reamed to the correct class, so the accuracy of the whole location depends as much on the hole preparation as on the pin. Grade rarely changes function here, but it does affect longevity: A2 stainless suits most indoor jigs, fixtures, and general machinery, while A4 is worth specifying where the pin will be repeatedly removed and refitted in a washdown, marine, or chemically exposed environment, since surface pitting on a dowel pin degrades the very fit it depends on far more than it would on a simple fastener. Hardened dowel pins are also available where the hole will see wear from frequent insertion and removal; an unhardened stainless pin is usually adequate for occasional realignment but a hardened option is worth considering for high-cycle tooling. Where a specific published tolerance and interchangeability between suppliers matters, the ISO 2338A variant of this pin should be specified instead of a generic dowel pin.
