PTS-UK have a large stock range of stainless steel wood screws in Metric sizes to DIN specifications. Although classed as Metric in Europe, they are also commonly still referred to by a Gauge number, particularly in the UK and USA, ie #8 gauge = 4.0mm. Woodscrews are essentially screws with a sharp point designed primarily to attach two pieces of wood together and are renowned for the clamping force that they provide to strengthen a joint. Commonly available with countersunk, pan or oval (raised countersunk) heads, they can also be used to attach hinges, hardware, locks and other non-wood objects. Wood screws generally have a partially unthreaded shank below the head. The unthreaded portion of the shank is designed to slide through the top board (closest to the screw head) so that it can be pulled tight to the board it is being attached to. When fixing two pieces of hardwood together, be certain to pre-drill a pilot hole and countersink. Failure to do so may cause the wood to crack. The coarse thread generally runs up to 0.6 x length of the screw. When it comes to decking screws PTS have the premium brand in Europe. Our square drive (Robinson drive) range is ideal for applications from a small residential deck to large projects such as piers. The square drive holds the driver and doesn't strip as easily as Phillips heads and the very sharp cutting tip means there's no need to pre-drill in softwood such as cedar. The corrosion resistant stainless steel will not rust leaving unsightly marks, even when chipped or scratched. As a general rule for how many stainless steel decking screws you need (assuming 400mm standard centres for the joists) , for 100mm board use 66 screws per square metre and for 150mm board use 43 screws per square metre.
