Pulling the mandrel through the body draws the far end outward into a second head, clamping both sheets together; once set, the joint can't be taken apart without drilling the rivet out, so it's suited to permanent assembly rather than anything needing future disassembly. The dome head itself sits proud once installed, giving a larger bearing surface and generally a stronger grip against pull-through than a countersunk equivalent of the same shank diameter, which makes it the more robust option wherever head profile isn't a constraint. Sizing a blind rivet comes down to two things: shank diameter, chosen for the shear and tensile load the joint needs to carry, and grip range, which has to span the full combined thickness of the materials being joined - too short a grip range and the mandrel snaps before the far head has fully formed, leaving a weak or loose joint. On grade, both body and mandrel material matter: A2 stainless is generally adequate for general engineering, automotive, and construction use indoors or in typical outdoor exposure, while A4 is worth specifying for marine environments, coastal buildings, or where the joint will see regular washdown or chloride exposure, since A4's molybdenum content resists pitting corrosion considerably longer than A2. It's also worth matching rivet grade to the parent material where dissimilar metals are being joined - a stainless rivet set into aluminium or galvanised steel in a damp environment can set up galvanic corrosion at the joint if the combination isn't considered. ISO 15983 governs the body and mandrel dimensions, head form, and grip range for this dome-head pattern, keeping rivets from different manufacturers interchangeable within a given size.
